CRE Preparation Guide

Essential information and preparation tips for the Common Recruitment Examination (CRE). Covers the three papers, result validity, BLNST requirement, and upcoming test dates.

Exam Overview

CRE consists of three 45-minute MCQ papers: Use of English, Use of Chinese, and Aptitude Test. Language papers are graded Level 2, Level 1, or Fail; Aptitude is Pass/Fail. Passing results are permanently valid from December 2006 onward.

BLNST Requirement

A pass in the Basic Law and National Security Law Test (Degree/Professional Level) is an entry requirement for all civil service jobs. The digitalised BLNST is available year-round at the Recruitment Centre, 37/F Revenue Tower, Wanchai.

Upcoming CRE Dates

The year-end CRE in Hong Kong is tentatively scheduled for 3 October 2026. Overseas year-end CRE with paper-based BLNST is tentatively on 5 December 2026. Check the CSB CRE page (https://www.csb.gov.hk/english/recruit/cre/949.html) for latest announcements.

Preparation Tips

Use official sample questions from the CSB website and your own timed practice sets. For language papers, practice reading comprehension and error detection. For Aptitude, work on numerical and verbal reasoning. Schedule your BLNST well in advance.

Practice Questions

  1. What are the three papers in the CRE, and what is the duration of each?
  2. How long are CRE results valid once you pass?
  3. What is the passing threshold for the BLNST (Degree/Professional Level)?
  4. If I took the CRE in December 2006 and passed, can I still use those results today?
  5. Where can I take the digitalised BLNST, and is an appointment needed?
